コロン　セミコロン の使用法について。

（2014年3月ごろに書いたものです）

コロン、セミコロンの使い方がいつもよくわからず、曖昧のままにしてしまう。

先日も調べ、理解したつもりなのに…。

そういう時は、手間を惜しまず、もう一度調べて、理解することからはじめよう。（→自分）

ライティングのルールについて調べるときに、こちらの本を参考にさせていただいています。

こちらでは、コロン、セミコロンについて、下記のように説明をしています。（書籍ではもう少し詳しく書かれています）

■コロン:

前に述べたことについて具体例や説明などを付け加えるときに使用する。大まかなことを述べたあと、細かい情報を述べるときに使用する。

例）
We are not satisfied with this product: It has cracked and mislabeled.

Two employees had to be dismissed: Linda Lee and George Smith.

The steps are as follows: Turn off the water. Connect the hose. Open the valve.

■セミコロン:
2つの節を区切る際、カンマより区切りをはっきりさせ、またピリオドよりはつながりを持たせたいときに使用する。

例）
Geoge thinks qulity is dropping; he’s probably right.
(; を ―（ダッシュ）で代用も可 George thinks quality is fropping―he’s probably right.)

The specifications were sent to Jack Smith, one of our engineers; Mary Brown, an inspector; and Bill Lee, a company executive.

You said that the design would be finished on January3; however, it is already March1.
(副詞節（句）と使用する)

正しい使用方法で、スラスラと英文を書けるようになりたい。

そのためには、正しい情報を理解して、実際に書く練習をしていかないと。
